‘Rocky Horror’ on the screen
“For some people, it’s not Halloween without seeing the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in a theater with a crowd of like-minded fans. The Broadway Centre Cinemas, 111 E. 300 South, Salt Lake City, will be hosting screenings on Friday, Saturday and again Halloween night, 10:30 p.m. for each show. The movie will be presented three ways: With a live cast and emcee Susan Steffee (the longest-serving “Rocky Horror” emcee in the country); with a different live cast and emcee Amanda Dusoe; or with open captions and a sing-along (no cast). Tickets are $25 for the live-cast shows, $20 for the sing-along, and include a prop bag; they are available at slfs.org. Some shows are already sold out…”

A timeline of drag’s history in Utah, from 1871 to today
“…Summer 1978 • Midnight screenings began at Salt Lake City’s The Blue Mouse for “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” By the 1980s, fans were performing along with the action onscreen, first at The Blue Mouse, then Cinema In Your Face and later at the Tower Theatre. In 1993, the shadowcast became formalized, put on by Out of the Shadows Theatre Group. The screenings initially were weekly, then monthly, and in recent years, in October around Halloween. The movie was many Utahns’ first exposure to the notion of drag, and the word “transvestite.””

“…More Rocky Horror
Also in Salt Lake City, Halloween shadowcasting screening performances of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” by the Out of the Shadows Theater Group’s Latter Day Transvestites remain wildly popular. This year’s interactive screenings, as always a fundraiser for the Salt Lake Film Society, will mark the movie’s 40th anniversary.”

“…It’s the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane
Susan Steffee will emcee, along with the long-running shadow cast, the Latter-Day Transvestites, at the Tower Theatre’s annual screenings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

How to do the Utah “Rocky”
Attending a Tower screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” isn’t like watching the DVD at home, says 27-year-veteran emcee Susan Steffee. “Be prepared for a bit of craziness,” she advises “Rocky” virgins. Also: Relax. Nothing is going to happen that you don’t want to happen. “There are 100 other people wanting to go onstage, so you’re not going to get singled out unless you’re trying.” She advises filmgoers to go with the flow, to stand up and dance, to sing along with the songs and to throw things. “One of the great things about ‘Rocky’ is doing all the stuff you’re not supposed to do at movies.”

Special Screenings
“…It was great when it all began . . . : The world’s only truly interactive movie, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” returns for its Halloween run at the Tower Theatre, 876 E. 900 South, Salt Lake City, at midnight tonight and Saturday, and at 8 p.m. and midnight Tuesday – Halloween night.
A local cast will perform before and during the show, leading the audience response and helping the virgins. A goody bag of props (newspaper, squirt gun, etc.) will be available for sale at the theater, so leave the SuperSoaker and other props at home – remember, kids, it’s a rainstorm, not a water fight.
Admission is $10, and advance tickets are recommended.”

“…2. ‘Rocky Horror,’ yet again
Time once again for the original interactive movie, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Polish your “Time Warp” steps, find out which old audience-response lines you remember, and see what a hottie Susan Sarandon (or Tim Curry, for that matter) was back in the day.
But leave the super-soaker and five-pound bag of Uncle Ben’s at home. Outside props are outlawed at the Tower (gotta save the upholstery), but you can buy a $3 prop kit that includes a small amount of rice, toilet paper, toast, playing cards, a newspaper and a small squirt gun. Proceeds go to the onstage cast.
Screenings are tonight and Saturday, at midnight, of course. Tickets at the Tower, at 876 E. 900 South, are $8 each.”

“…Adult costume party, I: It’s not a science-fiction double feature, it’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” ready to rock your Halloween once again — with midnight screenings Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Tower Theatre, 876 E. 900 South in Salt Lake City.
Tickets, at $8, are on sale now at the Tower. At the screenings, no outside props will be allowed, but you can buy a $3 prop kit with rice, toilet paper, toast, playing cards, a newspaper and a small squirt gun. Proceeds from the prop kits go to the onstage cast.
A reminder: The movie is rated R, and the language coming from the people onstage and in the audience would probably rate an NC-17.”

Stage & Screen (LDT was the cast for a few performances during the 2002 Olympics)
The Salt Lake Tribune | February 1, 2002
“…THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW — Those folks who complained about condoms in the Olympic Village will probably go nuts over this: Nightly screenings of the 1975 cult classic during the Games. Rated R for sexuality and language; 100 minutes. Summit County: Mary G. Steiner Egyptian Theatre, 328 Main St., Park City; Thursday at midnight, running through Feb. 24; admission is $7.”

Coming Up: Film
“…Give Yourself Over: “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” celebrating its 26th year of pleasuring audiences and ruining theater upholstery, returns for its Halloween engagement at the Tower Theatre, 876 E. 900 South in Salt Lake City.
The 1975 rock ‘n’ roll musical — about two innocents (Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick) caught in the clutches of the maniacal mad scientist Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry) — will screen at midnight Friday, Saturday and on Halloween night.
Tickets are $7. Be advised: this show usually sells out, so buy tickets in advance at the Tower. Also be advised: Tower management will not allow any outside props, but cast members will sell a goodie bag that includes a small squirt gun (for the rainstorm scene) and all the things you need to throw — rice, toilet paper, toast and playing cards.”

“…Don’t Dream It . . .: They’ll do the Time Warp on both sides of the pass this Halloween.
The traditional Halloween performance of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” — with a full cast performing onstage — is set for 11 p.m. Thursday at the Tower Theatre, 876 E. 900 South, Salt Lake City. Admission is $5.50, or a mere $2 for those dressed in “Rocky” garb. (The Tower will repeat the show Friday and Saturday at midnight.)
The Tower’s “Rocky” show also goes on the road, with an 8 p.m. screening Thursday at the Park City Library Center, 1255 Park Ave. in Park City. Admission there is $5, or $4 for senior citizens…”

May We Suggest
The Salt Lake Tribune | October 25, 1996
“…A LIGHT IN THE FRANKENSTEIN PLACE
What would Halloween be without “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”? Probably a good deal duller.
Think of it — no dressing up in ghoulish costumes, no screaming back at the movie screen, no spraying water all over your pals, no picking rice out of your shoes for days afterward . . .
Never fear. They’ll be doing the Time Warp again — with a full cast — at 11 Halloween night at the Tower Theatre, 876 E. 900 South, Salt Lake City. Admission is $5.50, or a mere $2 for those dressed in “Rocky” garb. (The Tower will repeat the show Nov. 1 and 2 at midnight.)
“Rocky” maniacs on the other side of the Wasatch Front also get their chance, with a screening at 8 p.m. on Halloween at the Park City Library Center, 1255 Park Ave. Admission there is $5, or $4 for senior citizens.”
